What We Use...

This is some of the equipment we use when going out to find some evidence.

10.1MP

18x Optical zoom (27mm-486mm)

Vibration Reduction

Autofocus

See pic at left to see how well the zoom works.  It gets you to places you might not be able to get to.  You could also monitor a location from a distace using a superzoom camera.  This model is about 4 yrs old.  I've seen cameras with zooms as high as 48x and 50x.  There may be even higher zooms available.

I use a Nikon P80 Coolpix Camera:

I use a monopod when practical.  It serves as a walking stick and a very stable mount when filming.

Try using Smartwool socks.  I tried them once and I will not use anything else.  They wick moisture, keep feet warm, prevent blisters, control odor and make you coffee in the morning.  OK so they suck at making coffee, but these socks are great!

Having a fixed blade knife is crucial.  When you are out in the middle of nowhere, help is usually too far away to chance having a folding blade knife close on your fingers and possibly cause a major wound. A boot knife is a good option.  I use a Bear Grylls fixed blade with a hard sheath so the knife finds it's hole every time and the sheath doesn't buckle when trying to place it inside.

This may sound simple but keep a field journal.  Good documentation is good science.  Be as detailed as you can.  Include things like moon phase, weather, calls/knocks, sounds, odors, what berries are in season, etc.  Keeping these kinds of notes will help you find common clues as to what works and what doesn't.  If you keep these notes in a spreadsheet you can query the system to look for commonalities.
